The Tough Crowd: Punk Movies

Movies and music were made to go together. Like pot roast and mashed potatoes. Neither are quite as good without their complementary partner. Since I love punk and I love movies, here is a list of my top under appreciated movies that also happen to be super punk (even if only I think so).

Pet Semetery

Since this is my first article for this column, it‰’s only fitting that this movie is the first thing I ever talk about. Any one that‰’s hung out with me for more than 2 hours knows that this is my all time favorite movie. It‰’s perfect and weird and kind of corny but it‰’s in a way only 80‰’s Steven King horror can be. First off, it shares its name with a Ramones song and that‰’s enough to make it on to this list. Essentially it only has one punk song in the whole movie but come on, there‰’s really nothing more punk than killer zombie cats and Fred Gwynne of Munsters fame. I was going to post the “Pet Semetery” song music video but I don‰’t want to spoil the movie because it really it a must see but check out the trailer below.

Lords of Dogtown

This movie has skateboarding, Emile Hirsh and good music, automatically making it amazing. Punk rock aside, this movie has the best overall soundtrack I‰’ve ever heard. The movie is great but the choice of classic songs used throughout is what really makes it worth a watch. A lot of the songs are classic 60‰’s and 70‰’ jams like Jimmy Hendrix‰’s Fire, but there‰’s also a nice chunk of punk sprinkled in. Notable songs include: David Bowie‰’s “Suffregette City” and Rise Against‰’s cover of Black Flag‰’s “Nervous Breakdown”.

Suburbia

This ones kind of an obvious, but this list needs at least one tired and true real punk movie that totally deserves even more recognition than it might already have. My friend took me to see this at the AFI theater in Silver Spring last semester and I‰’m so glad she did. It‰’s basically about a group of punks that all live together and get into a bunch of shenanigans. I wont give more away than that but just trust me its good. If you liked SLC Punk check this out because it‰’s better and more representative of the overall punk aesthetic. It feels genuine and even features performances by T.S.O.L and Vandals.

Stick it

This is the oddball on this list. This is a movie tailor made for teenage girls that like gymnastics. Luckily for me, I was at some point a teenage girl that loved gymnastics. I‰’d say this movie definitely helped guide me into the music loving person I am today and hit me at a time I was most impressionable. The movie opens with a Styx song and a girl in a Motorhead t-shirt so naturally music is a big part of the movie. While not inherently punk, there are Black Flag and Bad Brains Shirts seen throughout and as a teenage girl trying to figure out if being into punk is cool or not this movie definitely proved to me it was. It also features the only Blink-182 song I will ever rep wholeheartedly without being sarcastic. But really. Anthem Pt. 2 is such a massive punk jam and I don‰’t care who thinks otherwise. Check out the scene it‰’s featured in below (the song starts at 2:55).
