Mt. Royal – Mt. Royal (Bella Union)

Mt. Royal - Mt. Royal (Bella Union)

Barbara Martinez

Mellow dreams and power vocalist

With consistent low-fi energy and soulful female vocals, this indie-pop Baltimore group sounds like the best night‰’s sleep you‰’ve ever had. With steady and tame drums and lullabye organs, the Mt. Royal creates a great dynamic between soothing singing and poppy guitar. The powerful bassline provides a stable foundation for eclectic guitar hooks that are perfectly counter-melodic to the rich range of the lead singer, who might have been Etta James in a past life.. With a skillful use of the drumset and additional percussion, there‰’s never a flat moment in the beat, managing to create depth with a noticeable contrast between quads and high-hat throughout the album. In its entirely, Mt. Royal is backlit ambience with a bit of an edge, just to catch your ear.
