Angel Olsen ‰ÛÒ Burn Your Fire For No Witness (Jagjaguwar)

Katie Cheyne

A beautifully crafted masterpiece that will take you on an emotional ride.
Listening to this album from beginning to end, in its intended order, is the way Angel Olsen‰’s artwork is meant to be experienced. Burn Your Fire For No Witness, being the epitome of this. Her newest album opens with a classic, acoustic song, “Unfucktheworld,‰” where you will feel your heart break as she coos, “I am the only one now.‰” As the song comes to a halt, an unexpected, aggressive, reverbed guitar begins, “Forgiven/Forgotten.‰” Having a full band to back up her undeniably intense vocals proves to only expand her diversity and prestige. However, her folk roots and acoustic sets are still prevalent in this record. One song in particular that embodies this being, “White Fire.‰” It is painful. It is thought provoking. It is poignant. It will absorb you into the lyrics and make you experience the words she is so beautifully revealing. There is a nice combination of both acoustic songs and ones that incorporate the full band; each one being as emotional as the next. “Windows‰” is the perfect ending to Angel Olsen‰’s story. When she moves from her falsetto within the chorus to the moment where the instrumentals cut out and she immediately returns to her natural key singing, “Won‰’t you open a window sometime,‰” is haunting while also exhibiting pure bliss. Be prepared to experience a whirlwind of emotions; Angel Olsen is brilliant.
