Yellow Ostrich – Cosmos (Barsuk)

Yellow Ostrich - Cosmos (Barsuk)

Ali Newhard

Mellow indie-rock similar to Local Natives.

Cosmos starts with the song “Terrors,” which brings in ambient sound with guitars underneath the vocals. Punchy power chords highlight the chorus, but these same ambient sounding guitars fall behind most of the songs on the album like “In the Dark,” which also includes muted drums in the background. Keyboards are also used on several songs on the album. Parallels between Yellow Ostrich and Local Natives can be heard throughout, especially on songs like “Neon Fists,” which reminds me of songs like “You and I” from the latter band‰’s Hummingbird. In addition, Alex Schaaf‰’s high melodic voice has the similar sounds of Kelcey Ayer from Local Natives. Overall, the album is pretty solid; I found that it was a little boring towards the end, but if you’re a big Local Natives fan, I would definitely recommend checking this out.
