Cataldo – Gilded Oldies (Red Pepper Records)
February 28, 2014
Exemplary indie.
While a lot of characteristics fall under the umbrella of “indieÛ, most bands stick to one or two subcategories. Cataldo is one band that is an exception to this trend. On Cataldo’s most recent album, “Gilded OldiesÛ, dancey indie pop appears alongside mellow, somber, and introspective ballads. Lyrics about being lost mingle with more positive lyrics, and many are sung over rolling basslines and even a unique horns section on multiple tracks. One highlight on the album is piano ballad “Black LambÛ, which features passionate vocals and a melancholy horns interlude. Ranging from sweet to sorrowful, this album covers a lot of ground both musically and lyrically, and does so with seeming ease.
