Pillar Point ‰ÛÒ Pillar Point (Never Better)

Katie Cheyne

An unpredictable and mournful electronica debut.

Within the first three seconds, Pillar Point‰’s debut album comes to life, pulsing with energy before inevitably bursting into a synthesized atmosphere. Even though the beats and lyrics can become repetitive by the end of the tune, there are certainly numerous moments of originality woven in, including an interesting and unique chord progression sung by Scott Reitherman as he enters the chorus. This is only to be followed by the hauntingly beautiful, “Eyeballs.‰” The synthesizers are still as prevalent, making the song seem more lighthearted than it actually is. Nearing the end of the chorus when Reitherman sings, “we are all just faces in the mist,‰” he seems to be suggesting more somber themes involving solitude and longing, which are reoccurring topics that can be found embedded in the majority of the songs highlighting Reitherman‰’s real inspiration. Although the album may lack originality at times, the intricacies of the orchestration paired with doleful lyrics create an album worth listening to.
