Lo-Fang ÛÒ Blue Film (4AD)
February 28, 2014
A multi-instrumental conceptual storytelling experience
Blue Film is an album that should be taken in as a whole. Los Angeles-based singer songwriter, Matthew Hemerlein, under the name Lo-Fang, has took his life experiences and translated them into an album filled with emotion, a myriad of instruments and, most importantly, stories. His hypnotic sound overtakes the listeners mind, drawing all attention. The album opens with “Look Away,” a busy, upbeat track deeply influenced by Asian instrumentation. It catalogs the characters different levels of desire and longing. Immediately following is “Boris” signaling a drastic shift in tone with broken down instrumentals and a raw story. Blue Film was constructed as and should be enjoyed as a full story; everything has been placed for a reason. Though there is wide variety throughout this album, it is brought together with creativity and emotion.
