Creative Adult - Psychic Mess (Run For Cover)

Barbara Martinez

Cellar dweller garagecore

Post-hardcore is a lot more than angry noise, and Creative Adult successfully manage to bring a lot more emotive depth to their first LP, Psychic Mess. Think Joy Division‰’s dark emotions from raging California music vets. Like any proper hardcore band, the lyrics are more of a brooding mutter of a noise, almost an instrument of their own. This low sound is only emphasized by a bassline so thick it makes “Smoke on the Water‰” sound prissy. Likewise, the drumset puts immense, almost unnatural emphasis on the bass and toms, leaving the snare feeling surprisingly neglected and saving cymbals for loud crashes, keeping listeners on their toes. For what sounds so underwhelming on paper, Creative Adult manage to keep the album going strong song after song, effectively just transposing their music down into bass clef. Musical anomaly, maybe, but undoubtedly a push of emotion from someone‰’s cold, dim basement.
