Proto-punk-garage-rock-hyphen-sound

Chicago based Porno Mags has an incredibly cohesive sound for a band formed less than a year ago, probably gained from their strict definition of the proto-punk genre. Porno Mags follows the recipe rather well- late 60s meets garage. You have psyching guitar chords as the main melody, the vocalist following with the basic chord progressions (a good five note range.) If anything, the vocalist does more of a job keeping rhythm, allowing the drumset to remain largely minimal, mostly serving as added depth to the sound as a whole. The beat is reminiscent of Iggy Pop‰’s “Lust For Life,‰” though the guitar and vocals keep the sound a lot less lusty. Overall, this isn‰’t a bad album, just a pretty simple one. It‰’s easy to follow along to, there‰’s nothing surprising, there‰’s nothing extraordinary. If you like basic staples, Porno Mags will fulfill.
