Guster, "Simple Machine" (Nettwerk/Ocho Mule)

Katie Cheyne

A twist on their classic style, but still basically the same.

Guster has been around awhile. They have formed a pretty solid career within the indie-pop, bordering on indie-rock, scene. They‰’ve become notorious for creating catchy tracks that can, at times, make an appearance on the radio (most notably their track “Satellite‰” from their 2006 album, Ganging Up On The Sun).

After a three-year drought, the band is out with a three-song EP. Since the band formed two decades ago, they have attempted to go a different way with this mini release by switching up the instrumentation.

The first few seconds of Simple Machine is disheartening, but if you push through, you will find two infectious tracks. “Long Night‰” highlights the use of a chiming triangle, violins, a subtle usage of synthesizers, and guitars that sound like they were recorded in outer space, while “Never Coming Down‰” is a track you could listen to on a walk down the shore.
