Under The Tide: Music Festival Interludes, Penguins and Prisons

Tunes played during interludes at music festivals are hit or miss. You just want the show to get on without any interruptions so you can keel over to your favorite headliner. Because of this, no one really gives credit to the DJs who carefully craft their playlists to keep the vibe going.

However, the DJs at the helm of filling in the music gaps at my very first music festival in Singapore managed to reel me in with a song that encapsulated the mood at the St. Jerome‰’s Laneway festival, which had its origins from Melbourne, Australia in 2004. I couldn‰’t find out who wrote the song, tried desperately to find out who it was — I even tweeted the official festival account to no avail — and Googled incessantly with bits and pieces of the chorus I vaguely remembered.

Eventually, I discovered Penguin Prison.

Chris Glover has shifted and changed his musical style several times before settling on his electro-pop project. I‰’d like to say my music taste will always be open to everything that is available, but recently I‰’ve realized I have gravitated towards electro-pop artistes such as Penguin Prison. It also helps that the imagery created from the name is pretty harmless and good on the imagination.

Fans of Classixx, Chromeo, and the like will definitely find Glover‰’s music seamlessly simple to listen to; it is great for studying and having a jog to, as it is with most electro-pop music with good beats. The track that got me hooked, “A Funny Thing”, doesn‰’t beat around the bush with its heart-thumping pace.

Something less formulaic about constant beats and loops which is associated with such acts, is a track which I also enjoy from Glover that is crudely but humorously named “Don‰’t Fuck With My Money”. It‰’s a track I usually like to listen to as I begin my mornings, or if I need an instant pick me up. A little Schadenfreude-ic, I‰’d have to admit. “Don‰’t Fuck With My Money” was created when Glover sang into his tape recorder (which he sleeps with), and turned into a song the next day.

Glover is booked to perform at U Street Music Hall in 2 weeks on the 26th of October. Whether you think his lyrics are sarcastic or serious, his music will still leave you in a pretty good ol‰’ dancey mood.
