Slightly pop-y 90‰’s alternative rock-inspired tunes.

Algernon Doll would probably fit snugly on a bill with any 90‰’s alt rock outfit. That isn‰’t to say that they sound generic though; in fact, solo artist Ewan Grant has skillfully taken the recognizable sound and mixed it with some pop and grunge influences that make for a fresh and groovy album.

The opening track, “Spilt Milk Perfume‰Û, features some very J Mascis-esque riffs while Grant‰’s melancholy singing creates a catchy tune for any fan of the genre. He does get heavier at times though, most notably on “Tamed‰” and “Fellate‰Û. The former sounds like the climax to “The Bends‰Û, with its powerful drumming and overarching and distorted guitars while the latter goes almost full grunge, and sounds like it‰’d be right at home on Nevermind

The album is an extremely fun blending of a lot of 90‰’s sounds that we‰’re all so used to hearing, topped off with a modern pop-y nudge.
