Criminal Hygiene, "Radio Free Antartica" (Self-Released)
November 13, 2014
West coast garage punk.
Criminal Hygiene apparently enjoys getting drunk before recording music, and it shows on this album. But not in a bad way. The album has sort of a haphazard messiness to it, but rather turn the listener off it provides its own unique charm to the album.
“Withdrawn” opens the album with a fun, sing-along-able song that ends with a flurry of guitars, drums, layered vocals, and what sounds like a miniature piano. Turpentine features a hard and fast guitar shredding that gets adrenaline flowing.
The album isn’t without its somber moments though. “Andrew’s Song” features more sparse guitars and only a tambourine and clapping for percussion, as the ambient “oohs” backup the singing. It’s easy to tell that the band themselves had a blast while recording, and hopefully listening will be equally as fun.
