John Wesley Coleman III, "The Love That You Own" (Burger)

Ian Evans

A blast of scorching, sun-spoiled distortion.

“I Wish The Night To Be A Lot Longer‰” transports the listener into what sounds like a southern version of Mac Demarco‰’s “Salad Days‰” or somewhat of an electrified Townes Van Zandt. Born and bred in the Lone Star State, Coleman III has dabbled in art, poetry and comedy. It‰’s safe to say its all present in his Burger Records debut. Part Woody Guthrie, Pavement, Kurt Vile sometimes Dr. Dog, The Love That You Own serves as a mish- mash of folk, punk and garage rock.

The album artwork is some of the most fitting and best I‰’ve ever seen. Describing it here doesn‰’t do it justice either. “Love is Blind‰” combines a poppy refrain with some of the grit that many attribute to John Wesley Coleman III‰’s experiences living “as a drifter‰” in Austin, Texas. Part of this record, as a midwesterner myself, takes me to the long car rides across endlessly flat land in the debilitating heat of summer. “Money In My Pocket‰” and “Looking For The Same Thing(Silver Jeans)‰” round out the album really well and use some great vintage organ. The latter has much less of that tongue-in-cheek feel from the rest of the album.

That‰’s the greatest thing about The Love That You Own. It exudes this careless, egotistical vibe that characterizes the music but underneath that exterior there are nevertheless well crafted songs and musicianship. “I Wish The Night To Be A Lot Longer‰” is a must listen!
