Deanna Mudry

Sunny energetic surf punk

Ratworld is a super upbeat album that combines the spirit of new lo-fi slacker West Coast rock with fuzzy 90s pop rock; an infectious combination given an original edge by Leeds‰’ Menace Beach. The album skillfully combines pointed, distorted guitar and vocals all while churning out catchy pop tunes. What really stands out about Ratworld is that most of the songs include the classic backing vocals of “oohs‰” and “aahs‰” while still staying firmly in the realm of upbeat yet aggressive alt-rock, making the album unique. The airy, feedback heavy “Blue Eye‰” carries the album along with the harmonious, yet screeching “Tennis Court‰” and the anthemic, awesome title track reminiscent of the Breeders‰’ hit “Cannonball.‰” Overall Ratworld is messy, chaotic and fun.
