St. James‰’ showcases vocals that are crooning at times, rugged at others, and passionate always. Honest and emotional lyrics establish St. James as a very aware songwriter, with truly poetical phrases and the sounds he chooses to construct around them are equally as intriguing. Foundational acoustic guitar riffs are made lively by lilting electric guitar melodies, sparkling piano rhythms, and punchy percussion. The Shakes maintains an upbeat mood, even on songs with darker themes, which gives it a peculiar but appreciated youthful feeling. The album has the perfect combination of simple sounds and epic ones, which makes it relatable, enjoyable, and downright beautiful.
