Porque no los Dos: Surprise! Elvis Crespo at Coachella and "Suavemente"

Andrea Diaz

While racing to meet a deadline for a class, I received a video via iMessage from my cousin who was at Coachella. I thought it was just a clip of Kaytranada or Jamie XX‰’s set, but nothing could’ve prepared me for what I saw on the screen. It was none other than Puerto Rican musician Elvis Crespo making a surprise appearance during Deorro‰’s set.

This is huge, especially when the Coachella line-up failed to include a sufficient amount of Latino musicians in a state with a large Latino population. But I can‰’t blame Goldenvoice for this exclusion of a large demographic; after all, they organize  Supersonico Fest in October, which showcases a full Latin line-up in the heart of Los Angeles.

For all you Wonks out there, I‰’d like to brag that Elvis Crespo’s famous song “Suavemente‰” was recently featured on an episode of House of Cards.

Released in 1998 under his album Suavemente, the track has been kept alive by dance clubs, mariachi bands, covers and remixes throughout the years. The song even captured hearts in Hungary and Belgium as it peaked high in the Top 40 charts during its release that year. In the U.S., it was included in almost every Billboard category, from Hot 100 to Dance singles and more.

The merengue beat is infectious. The rhythm is bound to take over hips, make them sway in ways you never imagined possible. The lyrics are lip-sync worthy and simple; even the Spanish lyrics are easy to follow, but don‰’t forget to thank your high school teacher for that. You will instantly feel like the salsa girl emoji, twirling wherever it is you decide to blast this jam.

This song will never die. Deorro is reviving it by collaborating with Elvis Crespo for his next album and 20 years from now, on that trip to Spain or Cuba you fantasize about, it will be in the background of your warm, summer night in a salsa bar.
