They Might Be Giants, "Glean" (Idlewild/Megaforce)
April 24, 2015
Intellectual, multi-instrumental pop rock
Over the course of their long and illustrious career They Might Be Giants have garnered a reputation for being slightly nerdy but always a lot of fun, and their latest record is no exception. The 15 tracks feature an astonishingly wide variety of instruments, from classic guitar and bass to trombones, pianos, clarinets, and violins. All the sounds are layered beautifully, and makes every song a whole new experience. And all of the songs are, as usual from this band, extremely fun to dance to. Thematically the songs are also eclectic – a song thanking the human body to one about childhood birthday dreams being crushed. As to be expected from a band that wrote a song about the composition of the Sun, everything seems very well organized and has an irresistibly catchy allure to it.
