Mood: Panicking at the Disco

Tessa Dolt

It‰’s a Friday night and if you‰’re like me, you‰’re going back and forth between staying cooped up in a heated blanket and watching nature documentaries or going out. But that can make some people anxious, especially if you‰’re being pressured to do so. To liven up the mood, I decided to be corny and gather some tracks I think would prevent someone from “panicking at the disco‰” or even panicking in general because it‰’s 2016 and most college students aren‰’t going to discos.

Track 1: “Going Out” ‰ÛÒ Dinner

Danish producer and singer Anders Rhedin otherwise known as Dinner, has a sound that feels like 80s Euro pop paired with a gospel-like voice. This song is fun and feel-good, and the lyrics capture, what I believe to be, an internal debate of whether to go out or not. After you listen to this, the answer will be yes. Disclaimer: Some people I‰’ve talked to say that Dinner is ogre music, so results may vary.

Track 2: “Dancing Anymore” ‰ÛÒ Is Tropical

For the next track, I chose an electro rock song that has a nice balance between music you can dance to and music that puts you at ease. While repetitive in lyrics, it‰’s catchy and captures the conflicting feelings of going out.

Track 3: “Seattle Party” ‰ÛÒ Chastity Belt

This song just fits. It‰’s about throwing a party and questioning whether people are having fun ‰ÛÒ a pretty standard night. Known for their irreverent humor (just look at the title of their first album), this indie band is both moody and dancy. Not to mention, Julia Shapiro of Chastity Belt has a beautiful voice.

Track 4: “Just Like Tropica-L” ‰ÛÒ Soft Powers

Off Soft Powers‰’ album “Bad Pop‰Û, this song has an energetic tune with inaudible lyrics and so yes, it‰’s bad pop but in the best way possible. This pick is different than the others in that the lyrical content does not match the ‰panicking at the disco‰’ mood that‰’s been set, but it has the potential of inspiring a good mood.

Track 5: “Go Outside” ‰ÛÒ Cults

By now, hopefully your spirits are lifted and you are coming around to the idea of going out. And if not, that‰’s totally fine too. For the last track, I chose something decidedly about wanting to go out because that‰’s kind of the end goal here ‰ÛÒ if you happen to be anxious about any weekend plans, here‰’s your encouragement from experimental pop duo, Cults.
