Weekend Picks: Earth Day, WVAU Prom, and Finals
April 19, 2016
This weekend is WVAU’s prom, Earth Day, and the beginning of the weekend before finals, so kick back with some carefully-curated tunes for your weekend festivities.
Friday
I picked quite a few feminine vocals with pop melodies like Chastity Belt, YACHT, and St. Vincent which feels fitting for getting ready whether you’re singing along in the shower, finding an outfit, or whatever you do. The first and last song of the playlist are intentionally out of place. Washed Out’s “Entrance” is dedicated to Earth Day—it’s the feel-good song in the mix that borrows from nature’s sounds. As for the final song, I wanted to finish abrasive and powerful to set the tone of the night and what better way to do that than with some Mykki Blanco?

Got that PPD (post-prom depression)? Well you shouldn’t because that’s not real. But whatever you did with your Friday night, if you’re struggling to get out of bed, listen to some soft sounding, sort of sad, slow jams I got for you.
Shameless plug for WVAU’s very own Max “Hat Max” Gowan whose newly-released sophomore album Mass Transit sounds like a cool morning in the summer. If you like twinkly acoustics that sounds like Real Estate, you’ll probably love this.

Sunday
It’s time for excessive amounts of caffeine and work, and maybe a breakdown here and there!! I picked ambient instrumentals for the most part with some experimental songs in between. Treat yourself to some Monster Rally, Brian Eno, Sigur Rüs, and more while you study your life away.
