Welcome back to Just Press Play!

I think we all have that one song that we can claim we loved before it became “mainstream.” “Closer‰” by The Chainsmokers ft. Halsey is that song for me and, trust me, the radio hasn‰’t ruined it for me yet, so I‰’m sorry in advance, I‰’m pretty sure I‰’ll be playing it on repeat till the day I die.

Fans been waiting for the official video to drop for months, and, thankfully, our prayers were finally answered last Monday.

To get my initial inner fangirl reactions out of the way… HALSEY IS A BABE, DREW TAGGART IS A BABE, ALEX PALL IS A PURE CINNAMON ROLL, WHAT IS HAPPENING, #GOALS, SOMEONE BUY ME THAT NECKLACE, EVERYTHING IS BEAUTIFUL, *INSERT CRYING NOISES HERE,* WHERE IS THE RANGE ROVER?

Okay, now back to the professional, poised opinions that I always put into this column.

This video hit the mark on a lot of things, especially when it came to the storyline. Since the song is a narrative of a real-life event, it was nice to see a video that followed suit. A guy and a girl see each other years after a bad breakup and reminisce about their past relationship: simple and to the point. They didn‰’t make it more completed by trying out some convoluted story (*cough, cough, “Radioactive‰Û*). I also enjoyed the fact that Taggart and Halsey played the characters themselves instead of acting as the out-of-place musical narrators while other actors played out the storyline.

One dispute I do have with the video is its lack of action. While I loved the hazy hotel room scenes, that accounted for a good percentage of the video‰’s footage, it would have been nice to see some more action outside of the bedroom, maybe giving more insight into their relationship or even background for why they broke up.

On the other hand, the lack of action does play a vital role in the video‰’s meaning. For those of us who have encountered an ex or even thought about them on random days, most of the memories that pop up are the beautiful, most emotional filled ones. While we might remember details or days filled with being in love, lust trumps all, especially when it comes to rationalizing why you want to get back together with the person. Then reality hits, and you remember why you broke up with them in the first place. The video basically portrays the cycle of nostalgia, which is something that a lot of people can relate to.

While most might throw their hands up at the cliffhanger ending, I prefer it to a concrete one. Our relationships with people aren‰’t concrete; they‰’re ever-changing and open-ended. The video lets you decide whether they rekindle their flame or walk off into the night.

Or, maybe, they go for a drive in her invisible, unaffordable Range Rover.
