The foursome behind DC-native band Big Hush creates the kind of tunes you’d listen through a smog of lotus flower incense while sitting on your bedroom floor and munching on a bag of McDonald’s french fries you ordered from Postmates because putting on pants and taking the ten minute walk to the greasy storefront yourself simply wasn’t on today’s agenda. To put it in more musical terms, they churn out fuzz-heavy, shoegazey tracks that are far louder, denser, and, at times, poppier than their secretive name would suggest. Still, there’s a subtle sensuality to their sound that calls for their EPs to be spun behind closed doors or to be taken in live, eyes closed and head bopping, at the most intimate of local venues.
Big Hush, which is composed of Genevieve Ludwig, Owen Wuerker, Chris Taylor, and Emma Baker, has been releasing music on Bandcamp since 2012, but it wasn’t until the November 2014 release of their EP Whole that they garnered a more dedicated following. This EP was quickly followed up by another, Who’s Smoking Your Spirit?, in December 2015 which features a more vocal sound better fit for live shows. Most recently, Big Hush released a demo titled “Nerve” that’s constructed similarly to their most recent EP.
