No Cover: Everything

Kaylee Dugan

We‰’ve got everything this week. From great shows to great band names, the only way this week can go wrong is if you choose to ignore all of it and stay inside.

Take a chance and see a band you‰’ve never heard of on the cheap or spend a little more for a performance you know is going to be great. Either way, your best bet is to pretend finals aren‰’t rapidly approaching and skip school.

As always, tune in to No Cover from 4-5 p.m. this Wednesday for even more great music heading to D.C. this week.

Wednesday

Generationals, Splashh (Rock & Roll Hotel, $12)

While the Generationals latest album Heza may not be as catchy as their first album, Actor-Castor, and their most famous single, “When They Fight, They Fight,” it certainly emphasizes the bands maturity and emotional complexity. Catch them with the UK‰’s Splashh for the most indie Wednesday ever.

New Music at Maryland (Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, FREE) / Stile Antico (Library of Congress Coolidge Auditorium, FREE) / Nima Sarkechik (National Gallery of Art, FREE)

Can‰’t get enough free things? I hope you don‰’t have class on Wednesday then! New Music at Maryland will feature the original works of UMD student composers. Stile Antico is a british vocal ensemble who specialize in Baroque and Renaissance music. Nima Sarkechik is an Iranian-French pianist who has performed all over Europe and North America. If any of that interests you, then you know what to do.

Thursday

Rhye (Sixth & I Historic Synagogue, $20)

Rhye has been incredibly popular among WVAU DJ‰’s recently. But how can you not love Rhye‰’s intimate electronic/R&B/indie/disco mix? If you want to impress that special someone head to Sixth & I for a super sexxxy Thursday night.

Rhett Miller (The Hamilton, $22- $27)

I haven‰’t seen Rhett Miller since I was in high school, but watching him open for his band, The Old 97‰’s, was amazing. Rhett Miller shows are high energy and full of fun so expect to be sweaty and gross by the end of the night. If you have time before the show, you can always grab some good food at The Hamilton and have the perfect “dinner and a show‰” night.

Friday

Holychild, Ploy, The Reach Around Gang (Velvet Lounge, $10)

Boisterous pop band, Holychild‰’s, live debut! Self-described as “a middle ground between Katy Perry and Bjork‰” their music video “Best Friends‰” was described as the “song of the summer‰” by MTV Buzzworthy. Plus, when it comes to great band names, The Reach Around Gang would be another great one to name drop with Opossum Holler.
