Alden Penner - Exegesis (Independent)

Julia D'Amico

The Unicorns fans rejoice.

Post Unicorns break up, fans either followed frontman Nick Thorburn or Alden Penner. The Thorburn fans had their cravings satisfied by his work on Islands albums. And while Islands albums were solid to say the least, but Alden Penner showed up to create something much more interesting with Exegesis. The name itself has to do with the interpretation of religious text, and lyrically this feels like a religious text. Poetic, clear, complex, layered, and brutally convicting. Penner structured the lyrics similar to a haiku both in their rhythm and the way they embellish seemingly simple ideas to a level of profundity and conviction. The heavy and strong instrumentals range from clear and crisp guitar melodies to grungier jazz beats, with a touch of pop acoustic guitar tracks thrown in. Yet somehow the soft spoken vocals balance perfectly with the instrumentals that demand your attention. This is a love it or hate it kind of album- if you like music to demand your attention and sway your disposition, this album is for you. While it may not be as aesthetic and experimentally enjoyable, it is certainly a work of art in its own right.
