Justin Vernon taught him well.

It is impossible to not think of Bon Iver when you hear the name S Carey. But in his first full length solo LP, Sean Carey steps out of Justin Vernon’s enormous shadow and creates an intricate, imaginative, and painfully beautiful album. Less dramatic than Sigur Rüs, S Carey still manages to transport listeners to to places real and imagined and makes it clear that Range of Light was truly a labor of love. Less lyrically cryptic than Bon Iver, this is an album of description, from the corners of Carey’s mind (Neverending Fountain) to his love for his wife and child (Alpenglow). He frames these images perfectly with post rock guitar sounds, delicate piano, wandering harp, and well mixed ambient details. Range of Light is soft spoken, but its words are weighty and linger long after the last note.
