Vibe of the Week: In the Summertime

Kristina Kumpel

Hello all! My name is Kristina Kumpel, aka Tina Turnter, and this is Vibe of the Week. Here you can read about whatever music I’ve been groovin‰’ to this week, from new artists to keep an eye out for to old favorites to revisit.

With the arrival of fall comes having to say goodbye to summer. Goodbye to shorts and tank tops and the sun being out until 8 PM. So far, fall has been cloudy weather with the occasional appearance of the sun, and honestly it‰’s been bumming me out. Hence this week‰’s vibe: Summer. There‰’s something distinct about music in the summertime. There‰’s a feeling of freedom that comes along with it. Unlike the rest of the year when life tends to get a bit more real, we tend to do away with obligations and responsibilities and take the time to chill out for a bit.

Three artists sum up summer 2014 for me, the first of which being Real Estate. Unlike their previous albums, Real Estate taps into their melancholy side in their latest album Atlas. Perfect for rainy summer days when getting out of bed seems impossible, the album boasts tracks such as “Past Lives‰Û, “Crime‰Û, and the most popular track from the album, “Talking Backwards‰Û. While most tracks on the album have similar, simple instrumentation, I feel the band achieves great depth.

If you‰’ve never listened to Beach House‰’s Teen Dream then you need to do so now. A personal summer favorite for two years now, Teen Dream is, in my opinion, Beach House‰’s best work. They stay true to their dream-pop roots with their use of keyboards and hazy guitar, but the album feels much more complete as a whole compared to their other work (which is still great though). Victoria Legrand‰’s haunting vocals, especially on tracks such as “Lover of Mine‰” and “Walk in the Park‰Û, take me back to summer with every listen.

This summer wouldn‰’t have been complete with without Mac DeMarco‰’s Salad Days. Probably every playlist I‰’ve made recently has included a track by him. The best part of the album is its versatility, ranging from mellow beach vibes in the title track “Salad Days‰” to melancholy in “Chamber of Reflection‰Û, and manages to do so while maintaining a distinct character and sound.

While fall might be here to stay for a little bit, the music of summer will always be around. Check out the Vibe of the Week playlist for a little revisit.
