S, "Cool Choices" (Hardly Art)
October 9, 2014
Self-deprecation at its coolest and most self-deprecating.
“This is how losers feel/ I am a loser/ And you’re here to remind me” sings Jenn Ghetto (producing not at all ghetto music), originally a member of Carissa’s Weird, a Seattle-based band.
She departed from the group in 1997 to do her own thang. “Loser,” the song containing the aforementioned lyrics, is a rather bleak opening to the album, but track three, “Vampires,” represents a more typical indie rock song; however the lyrics are still seething with hipster self-loathingness: “I’m crazy/ you’re fucked up.Û
A rather unusual aspect of the album is the one-minute guitar solo, track four, which isn’t exceptional or eccentric at all, but it’s certainly something I’d like to be playing in the background of a biopic film about myself as I walk across the beach on an overcast day, an oversized cable-knit sweater swallowing my body and a cup of earl grey tea in my hand.
