Sama Dams, "Comfort in Doubt" (Self-Released)
November 13, 2014
Hot Yoga by Candlelight.
Maybe I just have a different perception of yoga from others, but Comfort in Doubt seems to me to be a much better set list than a string of nature sounds. It’s relaxing in a different way, a sensual way. Clearly, there’s something sexy about Sama Dams’ new album: the long drawls, the way lead singer Sam Adams borders the thin line between talking and singing, skipping the guitar rhythmically, un-rhythmically. It’s an interpretive album. Left to your discretion.
Track two especially, “Dirty Work,” is pleasantly reminiscent of The Kills’ “Future Starts Slow.” Although a definitively softer, slower song, I would argue the two songs intersect across the line of passion. It’s the deep-rooted emotions behind blurred vocals and coarse chords that are comparable. Though not acclaimed yet, I trust in Sama Dams’ future. The Portland freaks will have their claim to fame one day.
