If you like distorted guitars with unexpected violin breaks, give this a try.

New York based duo, Hollands, is made up of multi-instrumentalist John-Paul Norpoth and violinist Jannina Norpoth. In 2009 they released 2 EP‰’s entitled Faces and Mother, both of which encompass their distinct blend of rock‰’n‰’roll infused with folk intricacies. Their latest release, Restless Youth, the duo‰’s first LP, includes the same blend of genres with accents of orchestral pop thrown in for good measure.

Throughout most of the record, the tracks start out as something completely different from how they end. For example, “Great White Shark‰” begins with loud screeching distorted guitars and pounding drums, camouflaging itself as a standard rock song. Then, suddenly the guitars fade away, leaving behind a smooth violin break accompanied by gentle plucks of a harp before returning back to the rock verse.

While these dynamic changes may come as a surprise the first time around, if you give it a second listen you‰’ll see that all of these elements compliment each other in a beautiful way. Hollands may not be for everyone, but if you‰’re looking for an interesting, exciting and unexpected sound, give them a try.
