Gruff Rhys, "American Interior" (Turnstile)

Lina Alam

Shit just got weird.

Weird in the best way possible, of course. Known for his old role in Welsh rock band Super Furry Animals, Gruff Rhys already has some fame to his name. Comparing songs across his solo albums is an interesting thing; whereas “Whale Trail,‰” a single produced in 2011, is something you might expect to hear in the kids (secretly adults‰’) show “Adventure Time,‰” many of the songs heard on American Interior are a motley stew of smooth Americana intonations, electronic beats, and classical accents. I guess some people would criticize Rhys on the premises that his music is a bit of an identity crisis in itself, but I contend that he pulls it off.

If any of the songs on Rhys newest album are too “out there‰” for me, it‰’s probably “Allweddellau Allweddol‰” (but not really ‰cos it‰’s great). I think the name says enough. It deserves to be played at a cult initiation. Or a special occasion of the like. Shark bait, hoo ha ha!
