The Current: Flip It And Reverse It – When the Halftime Guest Steals the Spotlight

Watching a football game is not exactly something on my to-do list, but I feel that the Super Bowl is one of those things that you have to somehow witness. For me it normally involves sitting in a room where the game is on the TV but I‰’m facing the back of the room or my friends, basically not looking at the men in tight capris chasing a pigskin around and tackling each other. Maybe my distaste stems from the fact that the Super Bowl always falls near my birthday and manages to steal my thunder. However, I‰’ll always watch the half time show.

Like football, Katy Perry is not one of my favorites. Most of the concerts I go to are the kind of gigs where there‰’s a “suggested donation‰” at the door and the bands are on a makeshift stage in jeans and t-shirts. So I‰’m amazed by the theatrics something like the halftime show showcases. I feel at a certain point that all the other things on stage, like dancing sharks, just take away from the music and disguise the performer‰’s insecurities or lack of talent. As you can see, I can‰’t really get behind pop music, but on the other hand I can totally get behind hip hop. So when Missy Elliott popped up with some dance moves I was souped. A medley of “Get Ur Freak On‰” “Work It‰” and “Lose Control‰” then ensued and it was great.

Funnily enough, Katy Perry‰’s fanbase is young enough that they didn‰’t recognize Missy and assumed she was a new act! The day after the Super Bowl Missy tweeted “the new kids think I‰’m a new artist &I‰’m bout 2blow up like Paul McCartney Lorda ha mercy chile I love me sum y‰’all.‰”

Missy Elliott hasn‰’t had a new album since 2005, so what does this say about the state of music that she got a spot at one of the most coveted gigs of the year? I feel the answer is a weird medium between Missy Elliott just being badass and making a huge comeback, and the fact that there‰’s a big void in the category of female rappers. It is difficult for me to decide if Missy was chosen because she truly was the best candidate or if there were simply just not that many other viable options and the producers were forced to travel back to the early 2000s to find a decent act. Regardless, whether it‰’s the nostalgia or sheer superiority, I‰’d rather to dance to “Lose Control‰” than to “I Kissed A Girl‰” any day.
