The Current: Space Jam

Lauren Peressini

Scott Kelly arrived at the International Space Station yesterday and will be the first American to make a yearlong trip to space. This will be the longest journey NASA has taken part in. 365 days and only 230 miles away. In fact, it‰’s a quicker flight from earth to the International Space Station than from New York to London.

Kelly is accompanied by two Russians, Mikhail Kornieko and Gennady Padalka. (Interesting note, the Russians partook in a ceremonial stream in which they basically peed on a tire of the rocket.) NASA also offers a livestream of the ISS, which honestly feels a little like when I watched the livestream of Bao Bao the panda at the National Zoo.

What I didn‰’t realize is that the ISS acts as an outer-space lab. One interesting research project taking place while Kelly is up in space is a comparison between his health and that of his twin brother, who remains on earth.

There‰’s something special about space that brings people together. Maybe it‰’s the lack of borders or the lack of gravity, but somehow people can put aside their differences and it‰’s all good.

While I‰’m not a science person at all, I can appreciate that space is pretty damn dope. And it‰’s also trendy; you know you‰’ve seen people rockin’ galaxy patterned clothes. So I decided to make a playlist of my favorite space jams that the astronauts and cosmonauts (didya know there‰’s a difference?) can listen to while they‰’re hanging out in that final, infinite frontier.

Depending on how this year at the ISS goes, people could be on Mars in our lifetime! (WHAAAAAT!)
