Mavis Staples, "Your Good Fortune" (Anti-)
April 20, 2015
GIRL GOT SOUL
“Why did you spend,” Staples begins, “your good fortune on me?” I think this short line in itself is more provocative and thoughtful that most lyrics from most contemporary artists. Accented by self-respect, confidence, and self-awareness, Staples creates a fantastic EP that I truly want to hear more of within the current, popular music scene.
And each song is different. Even within a four-song EP, there can be distinct variation between each song that produces a palate of ~feels~ which is simply just not the case in so many albums produced today. Listen to “Your Good Fortune” when planning a meaningful revenge attack. Play “Fight” on a sunny Saturday at a parade when you’re running the city by yourself. Hear “See That My Grave is Kept Clean” when you’re feeling a solemn, controlled anger that deserves to be expressed maturely. And finally, listen to “Wish I Had Answered” to accompany a particular seductive yet pensive mood.
RIYL: The Staple Singers, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin
Recommended: All; it’s an EP. Just do em all.
