“Here Comes the Sun” by Richie Havens

When someone says that horrid phrase, “Beatles‰’ cover,‰” everyone seems to stiffen up as if the speaker just told us the zombie apocalypse was commencing tomorrow at noon or the Tupac conspiracy was actually true. There is, however, one Beatles cover that deserves praise. folk musician Richie Havens’ cover of “Here Comes the Sun‰” is a gem—better than the original in my opinion.

“Here Comes the Summer‰” is my response to that banal platitude (which is still ever so true), “shit happens.‰” Shit does happen. People wrong you. You wrong people. Things fall apart. Things change. And you could sulk and be miserable if you so choose, but you can also try to look for the sun in the small things. Richie Havens‰’ mad strumming and voice of a God telling me that “it‰’s alright‰” reminds me that, in the grand scheme of things, life isn‰’t half bad and that the sun will come out eventually. “Here Comes the Sun‰” is also just one of those songs that makes you want to be nice to people, and that is a very, very rare feeling for me.

Rest in Peace to legend Richie Havens, opening act of Woodstock Music Fair in 1969, who died two years ago from a heart attack. Your music has created has had an incredible impact on art forevermore.
