Veggie Tunes

Lauren Peressini

I am a firm believer that music can be an immense tool of support in anything that you are going through. A messy break-up, getting pumped before a soccer game, studying for a final exam. Perhaps even a change in diet?

For a lot of reasons, I have recently become a vegetarian. While for me, who was never a massive carnivore anyways, this is by no means a major life transformation, but having some lyrical support never hurts.

Now, onto Moby. Recently at the Moral Action on Climate Change, Moby appeared. To be honest I know Moby more for his cameos on How I Met Your Mother than his musical career, and I know him even less for his support of animal justice. So Moby is bopping around on stage, in a t shirt that reads ‰#VEGAN‰’. He is also surrounded by nuns carrying signs that read ‰Eating Meat is a Bad Habit.‰’ It‰’s all a little bizarre, but then again what kind of activism would anyone consider ‰normal‰’ right? At the close of his performance, Moby rather aggressively exclaimed, “You can‰’t be a climate change activist and not be a vegan.‰Û

Now at first this kind of pissed me off, because I am very much not a vegan (I am in a committed relationship with Mac and Cheese that I am not prepared to end anytime soon). But also opens a whole can of worms on the ethics of celebrity activism, which always somewhat unsettles me. While in our society it is very effective, I feel it shouldn‰’t be necessary. I shouldn‰’t want to do something just because a famous human tells me to. But at the same time if that is what works to get crucial messages across, then why not. Moby also had some killer statistics to back up his claim, that rainforest deforestation would be reduced by 80% if the whole world went vegan and that climate change would be reduced by 30%. That‰’s pretty insane. But at the same time there is definitely still work to be done that does not entail a drastic and costly dietary change.

Like I do in most new situations, I made a lil playlist. Most of these tracks are obviously related but some are more hidden. Like “Don‰’t Trust Me‰” withthe line ‰Tell your boyfriend if he says he’s got beef, That I’m a vegetarian and I ain’t f****** scared of him.‰’

Enjoy and maybe join team veggie 🙂
