An Analysis of Wave Racer

Jeff Greenberg

Artist production I‰’d like to analyze today is the artist “Wave Racer‰Û. A 21-year old artist from Sydney Australia, Thomas Purcell or Wave Racer, uses a blend of 90s gaming synthesizers to add a sense of brightness to his music. The production consists of a distorted 4 to 5 chord wavy main synth, a high frequency kick, a distorted tambourine, a live hi hat, a gaming-textured synth layering, and a frequently panning shaker. All make a unique sound, with added high pitched “heys‰” and low pitched “whats‰Û. Multiple arpeggios encompass the sound. In other words, timing of the main chords is syncopated, or the main chord is broken up and out of sequence. Flow of his music keeps listeners interested, which is why he has almost 250 thousand followers on Soundcloud. Wave Racer is part of the Australia-based record label future classic, which holds 26 artists, of which are known names like “Flume‰” and “Chet Faker‰Û.

Comparison: To me, I feel that “Chance The Rapper‰” is quite comparable to “Wave Racer‰Û. “Chance‰” uses fast-layered snares, and uses a quirky atmospheric sound just like “Wave Racer‰Û. Both artists, especially in “Chance the Rapper‰’s‰” Good Ass Intro, use arpeggios, which is quite similar to Wave Racer‰’s Remix “Flight Facilities- Stand Still feat Micky Green‰Û. Please check these out! Hope you guys find this cool, give me feed back if you feel I got something wrong.
