Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad make up the folk punk band, Girlpool, and will be gracing American University with their presence this Saturday at 8pm! Originally From Los Angeles, the duo now resides in Philadelphia with Waxahatchee‘s Katie Crutchfield. (Yo can I move in, please?) In my head, they all share clothes and constantly bounce creative ideas off of one another while eating dumplings. Maybe Alex G stops by and all my Philly faves hang out together…if only.

Girlpool‰’s self titled EP was released in 2014. I recommend Blah Blah Blah and American Beauty, especially if you‰’re feeling angsty. The two women often sing out in unison which makes their lyrics even more powerful. Their first EP was originally just released on Bandcamp, arguably the best platform to find DIY music, until the band was picked up by Wichita Recordings. Their album Before the World Was Big was released in 2015. For the most part, Before the World Was Big is a softer departure from Girlpool. Tracks like “Cherry Picking” and “Dear Nora” sound like edgy lullabies. (Mainly the line “It will make me feel better, Knowing you watch me like the moon, Truth is that I am working, For myself and only me‰Û).

Cleo and Harmony‰’s signature style definitely adds to their musical appeal. The two can be found, with their short bobs, in 90s denim, funky florals, and overalls. And of course, clad in Doc Martens. Their looks feed off of each other without running around like twins. Girlpool maintains authenticity in an era where it is all too easy not to. The band is raw and honest (“If I loved myself would I take it the wrong way?‰Û) One can tell just from the chemistry in their songs that Cleo and Harmony have a strong, beautiful, inspiring friendship.

So come out and see me make a fool of myself trying to become friends with them this Saturday in the Tavern at 8pm!
