Concert Preview: Rival Schools

“Rival Schools…like the video game?” Yes, you are both correct and incorrect. While the name of a popular ’90s video game, Rival Schools is also the name of a violent and raw post-hardcore quartet from the Big Apple that was born in the 2000’s, and they’re hitting the nation’s capital on October 22nd at The Atlantis stage.

Coming off their second “re-banding” and the 20th reunion of their debut self-titled album, Rival Schools has definitely not lost their spark. After releasing a sequel EP to their 2001 record, the group showed that they still have what it takes to be considered a staple in the post-hardcore scene. A culmination of distraught vocals and ripping instrumentals transport the audience to a violent soundscape created by the group. The immersion of their songs creates this gripping sensation in your chest, leaving you desperate for the cathartic release of their choruses.

The quality of music only acts as the band’s foundation, live performances are a whole other deal. Anyone who’s ever been to a heavier rock concert can attest to the energy in those venues, and Rival Schools doesn’t skimp on this at all. The weight of their sound only becomes that much heavier when they’re on stage, and it is definitely not something to sleep on.

Supported by Tokyo-born trio Hollow Suns, Brooklyn natives Glom, and Superheaven off-shoot Webbed Wing, this show is set to be a killer. With doors at 6:30pm, be sure to make some time in your Tuesday for a little chaos and a lot of fun!
