Concert Preview: Goth Babe

Making his debut in 2015, Goth Babe (aka Griff Washburn) has been making sunny surf-indie-rock that combines music with environmental advocacy. Partnered with organizations such as Protect Our Winters, Conservation Lands Foundation, Project Zero and JuneShine, Washburn uses his successful musical platform to protect the Earth and encourages his listeners to do the same. Having undertaken an ambitious trip down the Pacific towards Mexico in a sailboat named Lola (the namesake of his latest album), the sounds and titles of Goth Babe’s various releases over the past few years reflect not only this physical journey, but also the mental and musical journey of Washburn.

From his 2024 debut album “Lola” to his slew of singles dating back to 2015, Washburn’s indie-pop-meets-psychedelic-surf-rock is reminiscent of other artists such as Peach Pit and Surf Curse. Tracks such as “Sometimes” and “Weekend Friend” feel like a summer drive down the coast with the windows open, managing to encapsulate nostalgic moments within a four minute track. Even more lyrically downtrodden songs such as “Velvet Sheets” manage to sound upbeat and sunny, reminding the listener that there is always a silver lining.

Goth Babe’s music is a perfect listen as the last days of summer come to a close. Don’t miss your chance to see Goth Babe live and in concert at the Anthem on Sept. 6 before he heads back onto the ocean on his beloved new sailboat, Juneau!
