Concert Preview: The Rare Occasions

The Rare Occasions are strolling into the DMV at D.C.’s beloved venue, The Atlantis. This indie-rock band is ready to dive into their brand new album “Through Moonshot Eyes,” proving time and time again that trios work.

Childhood best friends Brian McLaughlin and Luke Imbusch started making music in high school and stuck together when they both moved to their respective colleges in Boston. While in college, they found their current bassist Jeremy Cohen and The Rare Occasions came to be. As the boys moved through college they worked long distance, including when Luke moved to L.A. after he graduated from The Berklee College of Music. The band found a rhythm in the chaos of long distance which proved handy later on during the pandemic. Their newfound skill allowed them to continue making new music, unlike a lot of other bands that ultimately fizzled out.

The Rare Occasions had their first big run-in with fame when they won the John Legend Songwriting Contest in 2014 with their original song “Dysphoric.” Further down the line when their song, “Notion,”  gained traction on TikTok in 2021, things changed for the band once again. They reached young adults everywhere and with almost 300k videos made, The Rare Occasions got a front-row seat to the power of a TikTok video. With their new album, the band hopes to relay a space centric theme with allusions to the planets and the hope of getting out of a bad situation. Their upcoming concert, which is a part of their east coast tour, is sure to be filled with their contagious head-bopping beats and mesmerizing guitar riffs.
