I hope you enjoy this excuse for me to listen to Childish Gambino’s discography!
III%3A+Childish+Gambino+Appreciation+Issue

Hello and welcome back to Rebbeca’s Rewind! Long time no see! This week’s episode is a little different, as it is entirely dedicated to one artist, Childish Gambino. I came across this idea when searching for songs for this issue and realized that three of his most popular albums were released in about the same three weeks in different years (I’m starting to think he did this for Rebbeca’s Rewind purposes). Join me as we immerse ourselves in the artistry, versatility, and sheer brilliance of this visionary musician. Get ready to rewind, reminisce, and rediscover the incredible musician that is Childish Gambino.

ALBUM ONE: Camp (Released November 15th, 2011)

Before I start this review, I need to point out that Pitchfork rated this album a 1.6, but personally, it is one of my favorite debut albums by any rapper. Camp is a rollercoaster of emotion and lyrical prowess that showcases the raw talent and unfiltered honesty of Donald Glover’s alter ego. Gambino’s ability to seamlessly blend storytelling with personal narratives is unparalleled. He can take an energetic beat and partner it with sharp lyrics that discuss various topics, from love to insecurities and the complexities of relationships. There’s an undeniable authenticity in his words that resonates deeply with his listeners, inviting them to experience the highs and lows of his journey. Tracks like “Fire Fly” and “Outside” showcase his versatility, with infectious rhythms that make you want to nod your head while contemplating the deeper meanings behind the verses. In my opinion, what sets Camp apart from other albums is Gambino’s ability to talk about such a vast range of topics while still incorporating Glover’s humor and personality. Gambino’s blend of wit, vulnerability, and musical innovation creates a listening experience like no other.

ALBUM TWO: Because the Internet (Released December 10th, 2013)

This album is an astounding listening experience from start to finish. From the production to the lyrics, the features, and more, every track is perfectly curated, and listening to it from start to finish puts it all together perfectly—songs like “III. Urn” and “Telegraph Ave” show off Gambino’s vocal abilities, while ‘“V. Sweatpants” and “I. Flight Of The Navigator” reminds listeners just how much of a lyrical genius he is. The features from Chance the Rapper, Jhené Aiko, and others add extra depth and texture to the tracks they appear on. The album flows seamlessly between songs while still allowing each one to stand out on its own. The album flows seamlessly between songs while still allowing each one to stand out on its own. In conclusion, Because the Internet is a masterful work showcasing Gambino’s immense talent and versatility. The album challenges listeners while also creating an immersive world that engages them from start to finish.

ALBUM THREE: “Awaken, My Love!” (Released December 2nd, 2016)

“Awaken, My Love” proved to the music community just how talented and versatile Childish Gambino can be. This album completely contrasts his other works as he evolves his sound. A majority of the tracks are sung, as opposed to his formerly rap-heavy albums, and he explores genres ranging from funk to psychedelic soul. The album showcases Gambino’s impressive vocal range and songwriting, with emotionally charged tracks like “Me and Your Mama” and smooth summer jams like “Redbone.” He takes risks that pay off, crafting an innovative, cohesive piece of art. Listening to this album makes it clear that at the end of the day, Gambino’s biggest talent is creating art and telling a story through it, whether in his music career or his time spent screenwriting. “Awaken, My Love!” marked a pivotal moment in Childish Gambino’s career. It’s a testament to his unwavering dedication to making meaningful, soul-stirring art that resonates profoundly with audiences, solidifying his place as a true visionary in the world of music and storytelling.
